The Sydney
Harbour Swim Classic provides an opportunity for the general public
to compete in a community swim event on Sydney Harbour. The Sydney
Harbour Swim classic is the only community event for swimmers starting
from the Man'O'War steps to Fort Denison and returning to the western
pontoon of the Man'O'War steps, exiting the water will be via a purpose
built ramp alongside the Sydney Opera House.

Sunday 2nd of March 2008 Start at 9.30am.
Registration Tables open at 7.15am and close at 8.30am
Location
The Man O War steps (on the eastern side of the Sydney Opera
House).
Registration tables are located inside the Royal Botanic Gardens at the QE2 gates.
2k Sydney Harbour Swim Classic Course
The 2k Sydney Harbour Swim Classic is open to any swimmer that can complete a 2km open water swim within 60 mins.
The start line is between the two pontoons on the Man'O'War steps alongside the Sydney Opera House for an in-water start. Swimmers head towards Mrs Macquarie's Point then into Farm Cove and returning to the Eastern pontoon of the Man'O'War steps, exiting the water via purpose built steps under the Sydney Opera House. Marker buoys will be used to indicate the course.

The 1k Mini Classic is open to any swimmer that can complete a 1km open water swim within 40 mins.

The Sydney Harbour Swim Classic
The
Sydney Harbour Swim Classic is a community swim event, conducted
by the Sydney Harbour Swim Classic team. 2 March 2008 will
see more than 800 Swimmers take to the water. Clean Up Australia Chief
Ian Kiernan will again start the national Clean Up day at the Swim.
Get in early. The
swim, a highlight of 'Sydney
Harbour Week' a water festival organised by the MSW Martime and
Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority. THE SWIM IS OPEN TO ALL COMPETITORS.
Against
a magnificent Sydney Harbour backdrop, this swim aims to bring the
people of Sydney together and celebrate our unique water-sports culture.
The
Sydney Harbour Swim Classic was inspired by our relationship with
water sports and support for the cleanliness of Sydney Harbour. The
SHSC promotes sun and water safety awareness. The swim has become
an annual event, showcasing Sydneys community spirit.

A Team
Competition - open to Schools,
Pools and Clubs, Corporate Business', Government Agencies, and Families.
Sydney Harbour Swim Classic runs the school, pool and club, corporate business, government agency, and family divisions as part of this year's program. We invite individuals to enter a team of three to five swimmers in one of the 5 categories, you will swim in your individual age category in the 2K course only. The team captain should enter the team online or by downloading the entry form and filling out the required information - there is no extra fee required after you enter as an individual first!
Five separate divisions/categories will be electronically calculated over the 2000 metre course with the lowest accrued average time from the fastest 3 swimmers in that team being declared the winner of their respective division and the lowest team time from the 5 categories being titled 'Head of the Harbour 2008'.

Prizes
All entrants who finish will be awarded a certificate of participation
on the day. Category winners and the Head of the Harbour - School,
Pool and Club, Corporate Business, Government Agency and Family Trophies will
be presented directly after all competitors finish their swim. Further
prizes will be announced on race day.

Eligibility
Swimmers aged 13 - 65+ years, who have trained adequately and
are of sufficient physical health to complete the swim.

Harbour Swim Classic is very much a community event and in keeping

Official
Rules
- Officials maintain the right to refuse or reject any entry.
- Safety officials have the authority to take swimmers from the water when they are deemed to have difficulty in completing the
course or if they haven't reached the halfway buoy of the 1k swim in 20 minutes and the halfway buoy of the 2k swim in 45 minutes.
All swimmers must be unaided to be eligible to win a prize, ie no wet suits or seal suits, no flippers or fins, boards, or any other floatation gear is permitted, no individual escort boats, surf skis or board paddlers will be allowed to accompany swimmers, – any person wishing to use a swim aid must first register his/her intention by contacting the race director prior to race day. Blind swimmers may be escorted by a “buddy” swimmer, providing the event director has been notified prior to the swim. All swimmers must swim the prescribed course. All swimmers are to wear their prescribed cap, number and ankle band. The decisions of the Race Director is final and protests are not permitted.
- All
swimmers must behave in a sportsmanlike manner, and follow completely
the instructions of the Race Director, Swim Marshals and Safety
Personnel.
Safety
and Risk Management
Board paddlers, safety personnel, rubber dinghies, Waterways patrol
boats and safety divers will patrol the course for the duration of
the race. Qualified personnel in emergency first aid and medical procedures
will be on site. If a swimmer feels unable to proceed, they should
attract the attention of water safety personnel. Swimmers
enter this event at their own personal risk, they are responsible
for their own physical condition, and are urged to train and have
a medical check prior to entry. A swimmer deemed incapable of completing
the course may be taken out of the water by safety officials at any
time. Any swimmer who pulls out of the race must notify race officials
immediately.
For the
protection of all swimmers, water control and safety will at all times
remain under the authority of Lifeguarding Services Australia.
Registration
Registration tables will be open from 7:00am and close at 8:30am. All swimmers will
be issued with a number and official cap, which must be worn for safety
reasons during the entire running of the event. Each entrant will
also be fitted with a secure ankle band with individual computer chips.
The ankle band must be worn at all times during the race. At the finish,
entrants simply run over a special finish pad and their data is scanned
and recorded with computerised tabulation of the time, number and
referencing to the entrant's name.
The ankle band must be returned to a race official before leaving
Man OWar steps.
Cancellation
The race committee reserves the right to cancel the race due to weather
conditions or other safety considerations. In the event of cancellation,
there will be no refund of entry fee.
Idemnity
All swimmers compete at their own risk. By entering onto the Man O' War Steps you acknowledge that you have read and understood the Event Rules and have completed the Event Entry Form, including the Release & Waiver, in full.
The Start
Race numbers on arm, caps and ankle chips are required to access in water start waves. Competitors will enter the Start Poisition matching the issued cap colour with their wave group.
Cut Off Times
The halfway point cut-off is 20 minutes for the 1k course and 45 minutes for the 2k course. The final time limit is 40 minutes for the 1k course and 60 minutes for the 2k course. Any swimmer not reaching the halfway or finish, within the allocated time, will be removed from the water for safety reasons.
Medical Emergencies
For medical emergencies, Lifeguarding Services Australia is located at the finish line and around the entire event. Event and lifesaving staff will be on hand at the start and on the water. Please notify an official should you require medical attention. The onus is on the swimmer to supply and make arrangements regarding special medical / health requirements while competing.
Transport
and Parking
Sydney Ferries, buses and trains all can be used to get to Circular
Quay.
The Sydney Harbour Swim Classic is within walking distance of Circular
Quay on the eastern side of the Sydney Opera House.
